Newspaper Redesigns
Three Gannett newspaper groups got a bold new look.
PROJECT
Florida Today, The Tennessean, and The Tallahassee Democrat daily newspapers and ancillary products: regional news, magazines, annual guides, and special sections.
OBJECTIVE
Redesign the three newspapers as part of a transition of all design into CCI, a content system management for print and digital publishing. Allowing for editorial to be written locally, but designed at the Gannett Design Studio in Nashville, TN. The redesigns had to use particular pre-approved typefaces and company-wide styling that helped with content sharing across products.

The two news A1 covers shown below are from my prototypes. I designed the other page and covers during normal production. My goal was for the work coming out of my design team to look like work I would produce myself. Big and bold, magazine style with impact that grabs attention. I pushed bite-sized content out front with designed inside jumps and digital tie-ins. Plus bold photography, strong color, and sophisticated typography.
Below is a sample of pages my teams designed with me acting as art director. We worked out the main story concept together with the goal of impact and readability. The centerpieces shown could stand on their own as full pages as they would be if laid out in a tab or magazine. The space hero spread shown is an example of complex inside jump pages where we dug into the content in depth. The last 3 1A's shown are original prototypes of the redesign.

Below are the portfolio covers I designed when we launched the new magazine-style section. I pitched full-page images and for the broadsheet cover to look like a magazine and I art-directed a number of the photoshoots shown here.
